There have apparently been some ugly rumors flying around about Neil Patrick Harris, former star of "Doogie Howser, M.D." and current star of the CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother." It seems that there has been some speculation and interest in the actor's private life and relationships and someone has been spreading the nasty rumor that the star is straight.
Harris has told People magazine's website that he is quite happily gay. A quote from CNN.com states: "(I) am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest."
I, for one, am thrilled that Harris has said this. I see no reason why anyone should have to hide who they love based on what others might think about it. It's no one else's business who someone loves and I have never had any of the gay or lesbian friends that I have had over the years try to tell me that I am wrong to be straight. I don't see why the busybodies can't just let men and women live their own lives with who they want to live them with.
I was thrilled a short time back when gay marriage was made legal in another state. Excuse me, civil union I think they called it - they're still deciding if it should be able to be called marriage apparently.
I was looking around a little and found the Wikipedia entry on gay marriage and at the bottom of the article it says: "Some U.S. critics of same-sex marriage have argued against governmental recognition on the grounds that the public should not have to shoulder the burden of increased taxes and insurance premiums to cover the associated costs."
WOAH! Excuse me? What the hell difference does it make if the couple are a couple of guys or a couple of gals rather than a guy and a gal (ya know, couple works so much better when referring to gay and lesbian couples)... anyway, what's it matter what sex your significant other is? Particularly when married couples are in the minority now.
Why should I have to shoulder the burden of married couples (man and woman) when I am a single straight white woman that don't even have a boyfriend? I'd much rather if I'm footing part of that bill foot it for gay and lesbians as well. So I don't see where that is even an issue.
Okay, I can obviously turn this into a massive rant, so I'll shut up. I just thought it was great that Harris has squished those nasty rumors that he's straight.
Way to go, Harris!
