When Marketing Goes Awry

I was browsing a few of my favorite websites a little while ago and came across this notice on the SFWA website when I was Googling where Preditors and Editors was at (been too long since I was there, I lost their URL) -- anyway...

The SFWA has an announcement up to let people know that a book, The Scythian Stone, a.k.a. The Blackgloom Bounty, by Jon F. Baxley, has not won any SFWA® award.

It seems that someone has been sending out e-mails claiming that the book had won 'Best Novel on the Web for 1999'. The award, said by the email to be "he prestigious Preditors & Editors poll conducted by the Science Fiction Writers of America" is news to the SFWA, who has never been a part of Preditors and Editors, has only hosted it on their servers for a brief time long ago and P&E has since moved on to Anotherealm and in Virtuo.

As for The Scythian Stone, according to SFWA (who I for one believe), the book has never been the winner of any SFWA award.

I guess this is what you get when you have a bad marketing scheme?
