If you are going to be on the roads this holiday season make sure that you take a few hours before your trip to check your car's safety equipment and make sure that the brakes and tires are in good order. My dad used to align the headlights as well by parking the car in front of the garage and using a screwdriver to adjust the four screws until the headlights were properly aligned. Consult your car’s owner’s manual or search for headlight alignment along with the kind of car you have in your favorite search engine.
Check the trunk and make sure that you have a good spare, jack and tools to make emergency roadside repairs. Also, if they might be needed, make sure you have tire chains and understand how to put them on.
An emergency kit should have things such as space blankets for everyone in the car. A small 12 volt coffee maker for heating water. Food such as trail mix and energy bars. And of course first aid supplies. I also like to carry something to start a fire with such as a paraffin and sawdust starter log and a lighter or matches in a waterproof container.
