Traveling with small children can be difficult, but a few simple tried and true techniques can make it a little easier not only on you, but on your child and the other passengers as well.
I remember years ago hearing how my oldest sister got strange looks when she was walking through the airport with one of her sons in a backpack carrier and the other on the end of a leash. It might sound like a strange thing to some people, but anyone that has ever tried to catch a three year old in a crowded store or airport understands the usefulness of having a harness and leash to keep them from darting off like little quail.
Getting some toys to keep them entertained during long waits is another good idea. Your child might have a favorite toy they want to bring, but for very small children it is a good idea to do a little shopping for some baby gifts that you can give them to distract them from the discomfort of having to sit still for long trips. Most toddlers and younger just don't quite understand the reason for having to sit and wait for hours between flights, but they will understand the fascination of a new toy that they can play with.
Be certain that you have some kind of snacks as well, since I have not seen very many child friendly snacks passed out on long flights. A box of animal crackers in your purse can go a lot further with a two year old than trying to decide if they can eat the hard cookie that you got with the coffee. Most flights I have been on have juices and water, but you might want to pack a sippy cup in the carry-on so that your toddler can drink it without spilling.
