Cedarock Historical Farm in North Carolina

Located in Burlington North Carolina, Cedarock Farm is a 414 acre historical farm that has been beautifully restored. Featuring buildings that have been restored with antique furnishings the farm has demonstrations of farming techniques used at the turn-of-the-century.

Walking around the farm you can see and hear livestock as you envision a world gone by, traveling back in time to see how the farm was when it was known as the Garrett farm and enjoying demonstrations of how life was for those who once called the farm home.

From the lush lawns speckled with golden sunlight that sparkles through the overhead canopy of leaves, to the carefully set table ready and waiting for the next meal of a time long since past... a trip to Cedarock Farm is a trip into the past and a look at how our lives have changed in so brief a time.

The history of the farm is rooted in the history of North Carolina. In 1830 Polly and John F. Garrett built a small log home when they settled in the western part of present day Cedarock Park. In 1935 the Garrett's built a two story house, continuing to use the log home as a kitchen until at least 1865.

An 1850 Census and Agricultural Schedules indicated that the Garrett's lived on the farm with their children and slaves.

John Garrett (age 39)
Polly (age 35)
David (11)
Henry (9)
George (7)
Sophia (1 month)

They were listed as having owned 5 slaves; an adult male (age 45) and female (age 39) and their three sons (ages 7, 6, and infant).

At the time the farm was listed as being 84 improved and 30 unimproved acres.

An 1870 census showed that while the Garrett farm survived the Civil War, its value was considerably lessened by the war. Despite the decline in value, the farm endured and has now been fully restored as the Cedarock Historical Farm to be a living museum of the history of late 1800's North Carolina.

Find out more about Cedarock and when you can visit the farm at the Cedarock page on the Alamance County NC website.
