Following Indiana Jones: Tanis, Egypt

For our next stop on the trail of the fictional archaeologist Indiana Jones you will want to pack some digging tools in your luggage, we are off to the city of Tanis in Egypt.

Tanis was mistakenly called a "lost city" in the Raiders of the Lost Ark, where the city was claimed to have been buried by a sandstorm until it had been rediscovered by a German expedition outside of Cairo in 1936.

In fact the city of Tanis was surveyed by Napoleon Bonaparte in the late 1700's. The first person to actually excavate the site was Auguste Mariette between 1860 and 1864. Find out more about the history of Tanis at Tour Egypt: Tanis or by searching for "Tanis Egypt" in your favorite search engine.
