Continuing to follow my favorite Archeologist, well fictional one anyway, leads us to the Urubamba River. The Urubamba River rises into the Andes near the Puno Region border, to the south-east of Cuzco. The river is a partially navigable headwater of the Amazon River.
Divided into upper (Alto Urubamba) and lower (Bajo Urubamba) sections by the Pongo de Mainique, a whitewater canyon, the Urubamba River has Inca Empire ruins - including the Incan city of Machu Picchu. While I am unable to find any indication that the Hovitos are a real tribe, it seems that the temple Indiana visited had to be in the upper section of the Urubamba given the ruins there and the closeness to the Andes.
There are tour trips that can be taken to the Urubamba River, and you can find some pictures of the ruins that can be seen there by visiting About.com - Tour the Sacred Valley of the Urubamba River, Peru. Among the various attractions that visitors to the Urubamba River can enjoy is whitewater rafting on the Urubamba River.
