Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark opens with Indiana seeking a golden idol in the deep in the high rainforest jungles of 1936 Peru. It is described in the screenplay as being on the Eastern slopes of the Andes, a place known as "The Eyebrow of the Jungle".
They are following a canyon wall to a break which leads them up a trail to where they can see the Temple of the Chachapoyan Warriors. This is the trap-laden temple from which Indy recovers the golden statue.
The Chachapoyas were a pre-Columbian culture in the Amazon region of present day Peru. Known as the Warriors of the Clouds, the Chachapoyas were said to have a lighter skin than other Native Americans of the region.
You can find out more about the Chachapoya and Peru at Wikipedia, or check out the CIA World Fact Book - Peru for details on today's Peru.
