I joined Zootoo, a pet lover's community that I am hoping will help me in finding information on how to train Bear and Shy Girl to be assistance dogs for my parents. I really want to start teaching Bear to do things for my dad, such as coming to get me if there is a problem and pulling his wheelchair for him. Shy Girl I want to train to retrieve things like the TV remote or the telephone when it rings and take them to whoever asked for them. I am hoping that Zootoo will be able to help me connect with others that have experience in training assistance dogs so that I can get some help and advice on how to train them and what are good things for them to learn.
So far I like the way Zootoo works, signing up was quick and easy, letting me quickly pick out the breeds of the dogs (even if I would have preferred to pick "unknown" on Shy Girl rather than "Mixed Breed" LOL).
One thing I really liked was that I can affiliate myself with local animal shelters and groups, participating to help earn a makeover for the shelter or rescue place. I think that it is a very kewl idea and picked my local Dog & Puppy Rescue as the place that I would be helping earn points in honor of all of the companion and guide dogs that were once in need of such a rescue.
The site is a great place for anyone that loves pets, not just dog lovers, and from what I have seen so far there is plenty of active discussions and groups at the site. I'm currently sorting out how to start a group for caregivers to find help in training assistance dogs, if I can get that all sorted out I'll put a link to it here and at my family caregiver blog.
Right now I am still sorting through the site, but I keep finding myself getting lost reading articles and journal entries and everything else. Lost in a good way, the site is absorbing and I am finding a lot to do there, so I'll get this posted and go back to browsing and uploading information on my dogs.
