Vacation destination: Hilton Head

Getting out and enjoying what is left of the summer is on everyone's minds - particularly this weekend with everyone ready to go have fun for the 4th of July. One great way to enjoy the summer is to rent a house somewhere to spend a week or two of vacation time.

Great destinations such as Hilton Head rentals, which offers world-class resort beaches to over 1.5 million visitors every year, can provide families with comfortable lodging and magnificent views.

The second largest barrier island on the East Coast, Hilton Head is the perfect vacation destination for anyone that enjoys water sports such as sailing, windsurfing or wave running. Charter boats for sightseeing or enjoy activities from fishing to watching dolphins play.

Attractions on Hilton Head include the Shell Ring. 150 feet in diameter, the ancient ring of shells is believed to have marked the perimeter of a Native American settlement that was in the center of the ring some 4,000 years ago. The town of Hilton Head Island website has a history timeline for Hilton head that places Archaic Period Native Americans visiting the area seasonally between 8000 B.C. and 1000 B.C..

Before the Civil War there were over 20 plantations on Hilton Head and the island was populated by slaves and their overseeers - the plantation owners did not live on the island. The oldest intact structure on Hilton Head is Baynard Mausoleum, dating to 1846.

Incorporated as a municipality in 1983, the town of of Hilton Head Island is known as an eco-friendly town. In January of 1997 the 6-mile long Cross Island Parkway opened, it cost $81 million and in June of 2007 was used by an average of 26,240 cars daily. Current toll for use of the Parkway by a single passenger car is $1.25 for a one-way trip.
