Travel Insurance

All right, I had said that I was getting this blog back toward talking more about travel and less about my personal issues, so I will make an effort at that - I promise. How about we start that trend off with a brief discussion on travel insurance? Who needs it? What is it? When do you need it? Where do you find it? How do you get it? Why is it important?

Let's tackle the first of Kipling's wise men - who.

Who needs travel insurance? Travelers who want to have a little extra security against trouble while traveling.

What is travel insurance? It is a kind of insurance that travelers can purchase that will help protect them in the event of everything from lost luggage, to their trip being canceled due to a hotel or airline or similar business they had booked through going out of business. It can also sometimes cover medical expenses in the event of injury while on vacation.

When should you consider travel insurance? If you are going on a trip, such as a vacation or for a business meeting, then you might want to consider getting travel insurance. If you are unlikely to be losing luggage or find yourself injured or stranded, then chances are you will not require travel insurance. For example, a two week vacation skiing in Aspen might be a really good time to think about it, but if you are just catching a quick flight to your sister's house and will be staying with her and only have a carry-on bag, then you might decide that it is not needed. It is truly one of those things that everyone has to consider for themselves and decide if it is right or not for their travel situation.

Where can you find out more about travel insurance? A simple search on the Internet for "travel insurance" can pull up a multitude of sites that can explain what it is and many more sites ready to help you purchase it. Shop around and learn as much as you can about travel insurance and the company you are considering dealing with before purchasing.

How do you get travel insurance? You can often get it at the time you book your tickets, or from many travel agencies.

Why should you consider travel insurance? If you have ever had something just flat go wrong on a trip, then you know the answer to this question already. And if you have never had anything go wrong while you were on a trip then you should count yourself lucky and consider if you might not benefit from being prepared when fate eventually sees that you have evaded her and catches up with you.
