Trying to lower electric bills

I have been trying to lower the electricity bill as we enter the cold winter months, particularly since I have to use an electric heater until I can manage to get the house heater repaired. That is going to cost a bundle, though, so I am going to be doing what I can to keep me and dad warm without having the electricity bill quadruple.

I would like to eventually get something like solar powered lights or those led light bulbs, so that the power use is down without sacrificing illumination. For now I will need to hold off on those kind of things and just cut energy corners when and where I can.

So far I have taken to switching out the light bulbs in areas where my dad does not generally go with low watt bulbs, and even in the bathroom I have plans for two different light sources, one with a good light for my dad and another one with low watt lights for me. I don't like bright lighting, and my dad's eyesight demands bright lighting, so that seems to be the best option there.
