Traveling is filled with experiences that we want to be able to remember, so it makes sense to keep a travel journal. What goes into one, though?
When my parents would travel up or down the Alcan Highway they would keep a notebook in the car with notes on the mileage between fill-up points, car maintenance, animals that had been seen along the road, expenses, and other notations that would be of interest later or would help in budgeting for future trips along the highway.
Other things that could be kept in a journal include information on lodging, a pocket to keep coupons in such as free coffee punch cards, gas coupon sheets, or hotel discount coupons.
A travel journal does not need to be fancy. My mom usually kept everything in a small 3”x5” notebook that fit in the console of the car. A 7”x5” notebook would be large enough for keeping journal entries as well. When we traveled in the motorhome years ago my dad had a metal clipboard that opened up for document storage (used by truck drivers mostly) to keep track of information and receipts.
Receipts are important to keep track of when traveling, so I recommend keeping something such as a zippered pencil pouch in the console or glove box so you can tuck receipts into it as they are collected.
