Schooner Wawona sails into history in Seattle

It is always a sad thing for me when a piece of the past is lost, and that is how I feel at the news that the 112-year-old schooner Wawona was taken from its moorage in Seattle, across Lake Union and to drydock where it will be stripped down.

Money could not be raised to restore the 162-foot long ship, so it was moved to allow for development of Lake Union Park. Back in the day the Wawona hauled lumber along the West Coast, fished the Bearing Sea and was used as a barge during WWII.

Northwest Seaport, the owner of the schooner, says that parts of the schooner will be salvaged for a museum where it will tell the schooner's story.
