I've been cleaning the kitchen as I listen to a thunderstorm passing by, waiting to get back on the computer so I could finish working on a website, and I have realized that I truly miss the once ever-present coffee maker that once sat on the counter in the kitchen.
Throughout my entire life there was always a coffee maker sitting on the kitchen counter, percolating away making my dad coffee and filling the house with the comforting scent of freshly brewed coffee that I realized long ago I associated with my dad, home, and comfort. The coffee makers have gone, however, since my dad began to be limited in his caffeine intake and I have switched to making him instant cappuccino instead. It is not the same.
There is something about the scent of fresh coffee filling a house early in the morning. A 'this is home' quality that it carries throughout the house and lets us know that we have come back home. I've taken up drinking coffee over the past few years, so perhaps it is time, even if I only brew one pot early in the morning, to buy another coffee maker and start brewing a fresh pot of coffee each morning once again.
