Labradoodle, Sounds like a fancy drawing toy you might buy the kids, huh? Actually, the Labradoodle is a kind of dog. A breed achieved by cross breeding of the Labrador Retriever and the Standard Poodle.
A very lovable dog, the Labradoodle was first bred in the 1970's by a man named Wally Cochran* who bred it as a guide dog in Australia. They're said to be sociable, friendly, and extremely intuitive. Labradoodle-dogs.net says that the Labradoodle is very well suited as guide and therapy dogs. The Labradoodle coat is reputed to be a non-allergen coat, like Shi Tzu's, making them popular among those with pet dander allergies, however - Wikipedia says:
"Wally Conran, has expressed reservations beyond the look of the coat to confusion (or misrepresentation) about how few Labradoodles are actually hypoallergenic. There is a commonly held belief that all poodle-labrador crosses are safe for people with allergies, and this is not the case. Conran also stated that "This is not the case and their coats and saliva have to be specially tested. At the Royal Guide Dogs, for instance, we had one litter where there were ten puppies and out of those only two were non-allergenic."
Whatever the truth on the non-allergen properties of the breed are, one thing is certain: Labradoodles are popular. The Labradoodle webring lists 11 sites with over 350 hits in the past two weeks, nearly 1,500 hits in the past 8 weeks, making this a very popular breed indeed.

* The name is spelled Cochran in some places and Cocran in others - I have not yet tracked down the proper spelling. Still working on that and will update this when I find the correct speling.
