Republic of Namibia: home of hoodia

Located on the South Atlantic Ocean, between Angolia and South Africa, the Republic of Namibia is only slightly larger than half the size of the State of Alaska in the United States of America. This is a hot and dry region with the Namib Desert in the west, which stretches the length of the coastline, and the Kalahari Desert in the east. Suffering from prolonged periods of drought it has very limited natural water resources.

Perhaps best known in recent years as the source of hoodia, a plant that has been seen a lot lately because of the appetite suppressing properties it is reported to have, the area is considered one of the oldest deserts in the world at an estimated age of at least 55 million years. The desert is also known for having some of the tallest sand dunes in the world, dunes that can reach up to 340 meters in height. Namibia is the first country in the world to incorporate the protection of the environment into its constitution with nearly the entire Namib Desert being among the protected lands.

The capitol city of the Republic of Namibia is Windhoek, located located roughly in the center of Namibia in the Khomas Region and supporting a population of 230,000. Temperatures in Windhoek average between 5°C (41°F) to 18°C (64°F) in the winter months, which are (June, July and August) and can go up to 31°C (88°F) in January.
