Art in the Picture - Renaissance, Impressionism, and other styles of artwork from the 12th to 20th Centuries

Art in the Picture is an introduction to art history website. In looking around the site I was impressed by the way it is laid out and found only a subject search to be missing. Knowing little to nothing myself about artwork, I would have liked to have been able to search for paintings that feature old people or flowers or other specific subjects. There is a wonderfully laid out search that allows you to search either alphabetically by the last name of the artist, or by a specific movement, country or century.

Top artists such as Degas, Picasso, Dali and van Gogh are listed in the top 10 artists, with paintings such as The Absinthe Drinker, the Scream, Composition with Red Yellow and Blue, and the Last Supper listed in the top 10 paintings.

A look at 15th century art provides a highlight of what happened in the 15th century, such as the rise of Modern English as a language from Middle English, Joan d'Arc led France to a victory over England in a battle in the Hundred Years' War, and printing technology was invented by Gutenberg.

Artists of the 15th century include Leonardo da Vinci, Alessandro Botticelli (known for The Birth of Venus and Madonna and Child), and Paolo Uccello (known for paintings such as Saint George and the Dragon).

"This knowledge I pursure is the finest pleasure I have ever known. I could no sooner give it up that I could the very air that I breath." - Paolo Uccello
