What is Page Rank?

You keep hearing people talking about Page Rank, but... what is Page Rank? If you are familiar with search engine optimization techniques or with Google then you know that Page Rank is a Google term that is used by Google to categorize pages based on how popular they are with others on the Internet.

How does Google know how popular a page is with someone else? They look for link popularity - that is they look for other websites that are talking about that page. They have codes that examine a page that contains a link to another page and reads through it searching for keywords. The list of compiled keywords are then compared to the page the link leads to, a second list of keywords compiled to determine just how interrelated the words from the linking page are to the page that is linked to. The better the two lists of keywords match up, the more value the system gives to the Page Ranking of the linked to page.
