Radio Shack battery club

Do you remember the Radio Shack battery club they had years back? I remember when I was a kid, I got my free membership in the club and then I think it was once a month I could go into my local Radio Shack and pick a battery out of the battery bins and show my club card and the battery was free.

It was a great deal since it let me keep my little ChowChow radio dog running (until my older brother stole his radio out of him), gave me batteries for my flashlights, and made me a lifelong Radio Shack junkie.

I still remember going into the radio shack to buy the things I needed to make me and my nephews Star Trek phasers once. The guy helped me pick out what I needed and when I decided that 6 strand phone cable was the best choice in wiring he gave me several feet of it for free.

I think they phased out the battery club near fifteen or twenty years ago now, and the small corner Radio Shacks are kind of a thing of the past, but I still visit Radio Shack from time to time. It seems to be less geared toward the hobby electronics enthusiast than I remember, but it's still got more than enough gadgetry and switches to keep me entertained. I remember when I needed to replace my computer's keyboard I went to Radio Shack and me and my oldest brother were looking around at everything they had in there. I was impressed by the discovery of a pen that allowed you to draw circuit boards.

I really need to get back into all that sort of stuff again. I enjoyed making electronics gadgetry as a kid, but got out of the hobby somewhere around the time I went to Job Corps.

Funny the paths your thoughts can stray to when your camera batteries run down. huh? lol

To be fair, the Radio Shack Battery Club (I was also a proud member) only allowed you to get Radio Shack-branded batteries (Realistic?).

Perhaps I'm getting old and grumpy, but Radio Shack is not what it used to be. While you can occasionally find the helpful person that you could find in the Radio Shack of old, more often than not you can't, and the selection of geeky stuff is pretty slim. I recently had to go to two different Radio Shacks before I could find a microphone to plug into my boombox.

I haven't written a blog post about the Radio Shack Battery Club lately, but I proudly list "Former member of Radio Shack Battery Club" on my Google Profile.
