I just saw what has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever seen on the news.
Apparently Nascar wants to build a race track near Seattle, and the residents of Washington are complaining because of the sort of crowds that Nascar attracts.
Excuse me?! Since when has the state of Washington attracted such great crowds? I have lived there, people, I know what kind of folks are in Seattle, and Washington in general, and they are for a large part exactly what the folks the news spoke to a little while ago were fearing would be attracted by Nascar. I'm sorry, Washington, but I am quite certain that Nascar would attract a much better class of people than are already in your state.
The problem is not with the sorts of people that like Nascar (which they got all wrong in my humble opinion), but that the state is a rodeo loving apple farming state that is cringing at the thought of their rodeos being given competition by race cars.
You want to see what they are afraid of attracting? Try hanging out at the Omak Stampede and Suicide Race some August. Or any of the 4th of July rodeos across the state. I won't even bring up the Barter Fairs held three times a year - or the fact that a large percent of the people that attend them now days come from the Seattle area.
Nascar would be a big improvement for that state, but tell you what, if that's not the sort of people that Washington wants to come hang out, bring your track up here Nascar, Alaska will welcome you, your fans, and the big boost to the State economy you would no doubt bring with you. Think of it, Nascar racing in the land of the midnight sun.
Would fit in quite nicely with the raceways already up here, and the drag strip, and Washington can just keep thinking they are not a little pot calling the kettle black.
