Why are there 83 bib numbers but only 82 mushers in the Iditarod?

If you have read my posts about the Iditarod you probably noticed a small discrepancy in numbers. The Bibs being one number off from where the musher is in the lineup or that I said there were 82 mushers then mentioned the last man out was wearing bib number 83.

Bib number one was worn by three people at the start of the race this year. Dave Monson, husband of Iditarod legend Susan Butcher, and their daughters - Tekla (age 11) and Shoeshana (age 6). With Shoeshana in the sled, Tekla drove the first dog team out of the chute and toward the Iditarod trail in honor of their mother.

Susan Butcher was a 4 time Iditarod champion who's passing from a resurgence of leukimia was morned across the state in August.

May her spirit forever live on the trail and in the hearts of Alaskans.
