Rainy Pass saw another of the mushers that we had expected to cross under the burled arches scratch out - Doug Swingley. Doug Swingley is a four time Iditarod Champion from Lincoln Montana.
Like Dee Dee Janrowe, Doug Swingley scratched after he incurred injuries just before he reached Rainy Pass. Mr. Swingley's injuries are reported by officials at the checkpoint to be possible broken ribs and a dislocated thumb.
According to the press information at the Iditarod website, Swingley's greatest concern was that he may not be physically able to care for his dog team during the remainder of the race.
In all ten mushers have so far scratched out of the Iditarod - 7 of them at Rainy Pass. The reasons for scratching are for the most part injuries and/or sled damage incurred between Finger Lake and Rainy Pass.
