Memories of C&H Sugar and Childhood

There are some things that are just timeless. I have always thought one of those was C&H Sugar. This was never proven more true to me than when I was reading the back of a little two pound box of C&H Sugar and saw that they were 100 years old. Whew. Time sure goes by fast, huh? C&H is the sugar that I grew up on. Reading the back of that box brought back memories of my childhood that were made more poignant by my eating of a bowl of Rice Krispies over which I had sprinkled the C&H Sugar. Ahh.... the stuff of which childhoods are made.

As my eyes drifted along the back of the box they inevitably found the banner proclaiming the long history of C&H Sugar, the California and Hawaii pure cane sugar I love so, 100 years of history and memory, 1906 to 2006 a lasti--- wait... what was that? The eyes flicker back up to the panel, the memories of childhood as forgotten as the bite of cereal I had been about to enjoy that now drizzled back in the bowl from a spoon that hung limply in my fingers.

C&H Sugar. 1906 - 2006. 2006. This is the box I purchased yesterday from a local store? A year old box of sugar? I suppose some things are timeless. I'm not sure what a year past the expiration date can do to sugar, nothing bad I hope. I'll be checking the next box of sugar I buy from that store though.
