Cell phone / laptop data card signal booster - perfect for home and travel

Imagine living in a land where you can flag down a passing train to catch a ride back to town. A place where the sun rises early in the morning in mid May, and will not set until late into the night in early August. A land where the sky is alight with the magical dance of the Aurora Borealis and gold still glistens, free for the taking, in the streams. A land where dogs race over 1,150 miles through winter conditions to honor the memory of an amazing effort to take life saving serum to a remote town on the very edge of the United States. Where men can stand beside bears and fish for some of the worlds best salmon.

Alaska is truly an amazing place to live. With over 656,400 square miles to explore it is over twice the size of Texas. More than 6,000 miles of coastland surrounds over 600 million acres of land and the opportunities for exploring the Last Frontier are as varied as one can imagine.

And yet, with all of this expanse comes a drawback. Cell phone towers are struggling to cover the most area possible and this creates areas where signals drop off between one tower and the next. Where we live is a good example of this overlap. My mother's cell phone will not work in the middle of her bedroom, but it will work (barely) if you step one way or the other - the signal from the cell phone towers does not quite reach the area from either side. There are several such locations throughout the house, and across the property, leaving us guessing where we can get a signal on the cell phones within our own home.

This is, understandably, made worse when we go out into the wilds of Alaska. We have been forced to abandon our favorite fishing destination because, although there are emergency services in the area, there is no reception on the cell phone at the location we have always loved to go fishing. This is the kind of situation where a portable cell phone booster can be a life saver.

Powerful Signal has a portable cell phone booster, the Wilson SignalBoost Cellular Amplifier, that can boost the signal of a cell phone or laptop data card to up to 10 times the power without the booster. In addition to a standard AC/DC power supply, the signal booster includes a DC power adapter that allows you to run the booster using your car or recreational vehicle's 12 volt powered cigarette lighter. This is perfect for hunters who, like me, have 12 volt cigarette lighter plugs on their ATVs, because it allows them to boost the signals on their cell phones in the event of an emergency. The booster is contained in a vented carrying case, so that it is easily transfered between your home and vehicle, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of improved signal strength anywhere you need to go.

I can see so many uses for a device like this in Alaska, not only as a person running my own business and a full-time family caregiver, but as someone that loves the possibilities for outdoor adventure that Alaska offers. It would be nice to be able to take my ATV up to the river for some fishing and log my laptop into the Internet to get some work done as I am waiting for the season to open at midnight. Or how about checking the current prices for gold while taking a break from hunting for gold at the recreational mining site in Hope?

It's not all fun and games. A full-time caregiver to elderly parents, I understand the importance of being able to contact emergency services at any time. My parents love to travel, but their travel has been less and less because of a need to be able to contact a doctor or emergency services in the event of problems. A cellular amplifier would make it possible for my parents to travel without worrying that their cell phone might fail them when it is needed the most. Once again my parents and I could take on the wilds of Alaska, fishing and picking Alaskan wild berries and panning for gold in remote areas on the edge of current cell tower range.

One of our favorite destinations, Hatcher Pass, suffers from multiple signal towers that do not quite overlap, leaving many areas out of range of a tower signal and forcing my parents to limit the time they can spend watching my brother paraglide or picking blueberries with the grandchildren.

But what exactly is a portable cell phone booster and how would it make a difference in our enjoyment of life in Alaska?

The portable cell phone booster works by receiving the signal from a cell tower and amplifying that signal for the cell phone or the cellular card for your laptop. When you send out a signal it is picked up by the amplifier, which amplifies the signal and sends it out to the cell tower. This provides better reception and range when you are in a situation where the signal is weak or you are at the outermost reaches of the signal from the cell tower. There is no direct connection to your cellular device, so multiple cellular devices can be used with the signal booster.

One concern that my brother had expressed, when I had asked him about the cellular booster, was the device being within cellular standards on signal strength. That is nothing to worry about, however, because the booster has built-in power control logic. This helps to ensure that the maximum output of power is within cellular standards.

Rather you are living in an area with a poor signal from local cell towers, as I do, or, like me, you love to get out and explore the world without having to be disconnected from it, you should look into the potential benefits of a portable cell phone booster.

I experienced a similar problem. When I bought my iPhone, I first checked with “Got Reception?” (Gotreception.com) It’s a great resource for finding out where reception problems are most likely to occur BEFORE you lock yourself with a specific carrier.
