I've been working today on getting an old baking cabinet cleaned up in the kitchen. It's an antique metal cabinet that my sister and mom have sold back and forth to one another for years. When my sister moved years ago we left the cabinet, which had been sold back to my mom, in the old house with my ex-brother in law and nephews, thinking they were using it and taking care of it. Somewhere along the way they tossed the top of the cabinet outside and the weather did one heck of a number on it. The nephews were here the other day and I happened to ask about it. Good thing I did, because they said that they were hauling the thing to the dump in a few days. We informed them it was their grandmothers, and asked them to bring it here. Which they did - reluctantly. They felt it was better off taken to the dump. ::shaking head:: I'm in the process of getting the thing shaped back up. It's missing some pieces (small detachable compartments where stuff could be tucked) but it is mostly still there. It's just very dirty and rusted and the paint is peeling off the top cabinets. All in all it's in very good shape (one edge of the top the front corner was let rust away, but it is not something that will damage the cabinet as a whole.
My goal at the moment is to clean it up, repaint it - probably with the old Blackbird Bakery motif my sister had on it when she painted it for her sourdough bread making booth at the local fairs. I expect sometime next week to have the thing back to looking nice and ready for stocking with baking supplies. Then I'll celebrate by making an apple pie and some good Alaskan sourdough bread.
