Plane can't take passengers and luggage together

Weather in the Newcastle area in England made Viking Airlines reconsider their fuel to weight ratio on a flight going from Newcastle to Crete. The determination: there was too much weight on the plane to make it to Crete. The solution: Either the luggage stayed behind or 70 passengers took a later flight.

Passengers were unloaded and, after some discussion with company superiors, the pilot decided to leave the luggage behind to be flown on a later flight. The problem? That caused a delay of 3 to 4 days before some passengers received their luggage. Can you imagine getting ready to go spend a week vacation in Crete and then having to wait through half of that vacation for your lingerie to arrive? I can imagine there are more than a few irritated travelers from that fiasco.

So, what was it that happened? It seems that the airline did not make the fuel to weight calculations until after the baggage was all checked in. Then they realized that they had too much weight on the plane for the fuel they had given the weather in the area. With no one willing to remain behind to fly on a later flight, they dumped all the luggage. I best you that more than a few of them now wish they had taken the later flight and stayed with their bags. Or at least that others had so the ones on the flight could have stayed with their luggage.
