Need a new camera for road trip

I have come to the determination that if I do take off on my Ultimate Road Trip, the first thing that I have to get for that trip is a good camera. I have forever picked up second hand cameras that have more problems than they're worth, I want a good camera that can take reliable pictures during my trip. It will be a once in a lifetime expedition for me, so it does not make sense to take anything other than the best camera I can along with me.

Now, for me, if you are going to buy the best and you are talking about cameras, that narrows your options to Canon or Nikon. Sorry all you Kodak buffs, but I like them two brands, the Canon and Nikon cameras I have had over the years have far outlived the Kodaks I've had. My ideal camera has to be a SLR, I am a huge fan of that ever since my first SLR camera (which was a lovely Canon that still works, but it's film, not digital, I want a digital camera).

If anyone is taking notes for the holidays - the Nikon D90 is ... swoon. OMG I want that camera. A good camera has a good lens, a great camera has a lens you can swap out for the one you need for a particular situation. My old 35mm Canon spoiled me on cameras I can trade off lenses on. And the Nikon D90 lets you take HD cinematic quality movies. :::whines::: I want.

I definitely have to save up money and make something like that a trip essential item. If I am going to be heading out, I want to make sure that I document every step of the process - in pictures and film - and a camera like the D90 could so do that in spades.
