If RFID (radio frequency identification)is such a wonderful tool, then why is luggage still being lost every day by airlines? It's simple really, while airports such as McCarran in Las Vegas use RFID tags to track the location of your luggage after you check it in, the tracking usually stops when the bag leaves the hands of McCarran and enters into the hands of the airline.
Most airlines simply are not yet equipped to use RFID tracking on luggage. Why not? Cost. Yes, the chip costs pennies, but most airlines seem to balk at the very expensive equipment that is needed to track that very inexpensive little chip after it has been placed on your bag.
So, while RFID technology helps to reduce the lost luggage problem at some of the airports, it can not assure you that your bag will not still get lost once it has left that particular airport.
