Valentine's Day is just around the corner and with the current economic crisis everyone is wondering what the best gift option is. Travel seems to hold only about 30% of the popular vote in the surveys I have looked at (see below). The most popular option for many Valentine's Day spenders seems to be a special night out with their significant other.
In early 2008 CNN Money reported that the National Retail Federation (NRF) expected spending in the United Stated to reach $17.02 billion for Valentine's Day, with the most popular option (48%) being a special night out. The NRF indicated that only about 57% of those surveyed planed to buy a card.
According to Discover Card's 4th annual survey of Valentine's Day shopping survey. 73% of men and 57% of women who responded indicated that they planned to spend money on a special dinner for Valentine's Day, while only 53% of men and 56% of women indicated that was what they hoped to receive from their significant other. Travel held in at roughly 30% in the Discover Card survey.
