I can understand wanting to take along your favorite electric razor, or wanting to be sure that you will be able to recharge your laptop computer or cellular phone, so I can see where power converters are an essential part of anyone's "must pack" list when traveling to another country.
How do you find one that works? Not all of the converters can be as bad as they seem, and in at least one instance I was reading the trouble had been user error where the user seemed to have used the adapter on the wrong setting. It is, to the best I can determine, a case of hit and miss and researching your choice before you buy.
Let's face it. It does not make sense to buy a $20 recharger that will possibly fry your $80 laptop battery, or worse your $1,000 laptop, in the process of recharging it. So, spend a little more if it is needed and research the travel converter
Keep in mind, when you are on vacation, monitor items that are plugged into a travel power converter. Do not plug in your things to recharge overnight, or while you are out of the room. Possible power surges could cause even the most dependable of power converters to malfunction.
