Current travel alert and 2009-H1N1 Influenza alert for Mexico travelers

On April 27th the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued warnings to U.S. citizens advising that they avoid nonessential travel to Mexico due to the outbreak of 2009-H1N1 influenza.

The current travel alert on the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs website advises that high school (grades 10-12) and university classes were restarted by the Government of Mexico on Thursday, May 7, with remaining schools (kindergarten through grade 9) due to restart on May 11th.

Restaurants have reopened, having been allowed to reopen on May 6th, with bars, nightclubs, convention centers, and other gathering locations reopened on the 7th. Museums and other tourist places will open as well, but those wishing to visit them should check with the museum or area visitor center website beforehand to confirm if the attraction has been reopened or not.

American citizen services resumed normal operations on May 6th at the U.S. Embassy and consulates nationwide, nonimmigrant visa operations will resume normal operations on Monday, May 11. Normal operations for immigrant visa appointments will resume on Monday, May 18.

According to the U.S. Embassy it is important to remember that most of the cases of influenza in Mexico are not the 2009-H1N1 influenza.
