The original Kindle has a screen size of 6" on the diagonal, much smaller than the new Kindle DX which brings that screen size up to 9.7" on the diagonal.
The overall height and width have changed as well, obviously, with the original Kindle being 8"x5.3" and the new Kindle DX measuring 10.4" x 7.2", but the thickness is still almost as slim as ever, with barely noticeable change from the Kindle's 0.36" to the new Kindle DX's 0.38". The Kindle DX screen offers 1200 x 824 pixel resolution at 150 ppi.
Some of that size change has been put to good use, upping the Kindle's book storage capacity from 1.500 books to 3,500 books in the new Kindle DX. (That's a pretty good reference library there folks.)
The new Kindle DX has a native PDF reader, rather than the PDF support via conversion that the Kindle has. It also boasts a rotating display, a feature the original Kindle lacked. Otherwise, they compare fairly well, both versions having 3G Wireless, book downloads in under 60 seconds, Text-to-speech capability, and Whispersync.
Additional Kindle features I like:
- QWERTY keyboard, to let you add annotations to text like you were writing in the margins of a book.
- six adjustable font sizes
- "No monthly wireless bills, data plans, or commitments. Amazon pays for Kindle DX's wireless connectivity so you won't see a wireless bill. There is no wireless setup--you are ready to shop, purchase and read right out of the box."
- national coverage includes cities and areas in all 50 states - including high speed coverage in my part of Alaska! How amazing is that? lol
So... which one is right? Well, at roughly the size of an average magazine, the Kindle DX would make a good travel buddy, and with the QWERTY keyboard you can keep notes about your travels in the margins of your travel guides.
Weighing in at 18.9 ounces it does not add too much weight to a carry on and does not require a computer to let you download books. If you want to be online with the Kindle DX then you can expect about 4 days battery life, turn wireless off and enjoy an estimated two weeks of reading time - great for out of the way travel when you can't easily recharge it.
The original Kindle's smller size and weight (10.2 oz) makes it the better choice if you are always on the go, hiking, backpacking or perhaps traveling by bicycle or motorcycle where storage is a bit more limited and every ounce and inch counts. Battery life is comparable to the Kindle DX, so it really gets down to a matter of features and what you will be using it for.
