The Associated Press has updated their AP Stylebook and has declared the proper written term for electronic mail to be email. They apparently base this decision on the non-hyphenated variation being more prevalent in common usage than the hyphenated version.
And yet, they in the same entry advise writers to continue to hyphenate the e when writing about other electronic sources such as e-books, e-commerce and so forth.
I'm not sure I like the AP Stylebook going with the popular trend rather than the proper terminology, but they have made their call and email is the official AP Stylebook approved format now.
