Mayan Long Count - End of the World, or a new beginning?

The end is approaching, or at least that is what the hype would have you believe. Soon the Mayan long count calendar will count down to the end, a date that has been determined to be December 21, 2012.

The long count calendar is one of three different calendar systems that the Mayan's used. Scholars disagree on exactly how to match up the days on the Mayan calendars to the Gregorian calendar, which means that the any specific day could, possibly, be off by a day more or less. This discrepancy is corrected by location of a date that is known in both calendar systems.

The Mayan long count is scheduled to end around December 21, 2012 - I say around, because due to the inaccuracies of the exact day I've seen a few different dates for this end of the world prediction.

My perspective on it?

The Mayan Long Count Calendar has ended a few times before, and the world is still here. I think that I will have an end of the world party on December 21st, then start making some really great new year's resolutions as I head not only into the new year for 2013, but begin a new Mayan Long Count Calendar. We'll not see another one begin in our lifetimes, so let's have a grand New Long Count party.
