Where to go sightseeing before you go

Sight seeing is something that is a part of any vacation, and like most parts of a vacation you can do a little preparing before you leave home. You have probably looked at hotels and other things online, but did you ever think about maybe looking into some of the sights you might encounter when you are at your destination? No, I'm not talking about travel sites and visitor information websites, I mean places such as YouTube for video that other travelers have taken of areas of interest. Check out these videos I found at YouTube on points of interest in Alaska.

First up we have Portage Glacier. This is close in to Anchorage, just south of the city, and an easy afternoon's trip to drive down there from Anchorage or the valley and take a boat ride out to see the glacier. It even has a little information I had not known about how far under the water the glacier at Portage extends...



Then we have the bore tide, a phenomenon of water returning to an inlet after extremely low tides. This is something that happens out at Turnagain Arm just south of Anchorage. It is understandably a popular thing with the local surfers, windsurfers and kayakers and one heck of a sight to see - although I have never actually got out there to see it yet. Maybe one day. I've seen the sailers and surfers lined up to enjoy it though as I drove by on my way to Seward.



And if you want to know what the best view of the city is, trust the locals, they know and are happy to share their secrets. I've been up where these two went, only I was there in the summer. It is a magnificent place to see the city from and not too fat out of Anchorage... In fact, there is a LOT that a person can see and do near Anchorage.



And last but certainly not least, there is always seeing the sights from the air... what a way to see Alaska! Makes me wish I was not afraid of heights...
