Also in history, but a little further back...

June 4, 1876

The Transcontinental Express train arrived in San Francisco. 83 hours after it left New York City.

For around $80 for first class passage, train passengers could fide in beautifully appointed cars with plush velvet seats and fine luxuries such as steam heat, fresh linen daily and attentive porters.

At around half the cost of first class, third class was the realm of the emigrants and the poor. $40 would buy a seat on a narrow wooden bench in a noisy car. Another trouble the third class had to contend with was the possibility of a longer trip as their cars were often shunted aside in favor of express trains. A third class passenger might take as long as ten days to make the journey because of car delays. Still, it was far better than six months walk along the Oregon trail and the steam engine was quickly bringing a vast country together.
