Being a full-time family caregiver, I have thought about taking courses in nursing on more than a few occasions. I have first hand experience as being a caregiver and know what is expected in such a field. And I know that nursing classes would help me in providing care for my father, but beyond that - nursing classes would let me pursue a career in the future that I have already had substantial hands on training in.
Because of this, I am always keeping my eyes open for any kind of courses, particularly online courses, that pertain to nursing. One course I recently encountered was the ST. Xavier's Masters in Nursing program at Saint Xavier University in Chicago. This is not an entry level nursing program, instead they offer a Master of Science in Nursing - Clinical Nurse Leader Masters Degree.
Graduates of the online course will have a MS nursing degree and be ready to advance their career in nursing leadership by having the skills to coordinate care with health care professionals.
That is something that I think I could feel good doing as a job. I know that it can be hard to coordinate care between a variety of health care professionals, and I know that it is important to be able to have someone coordinating patient care between physicians, pharmacists and social workers.
As a family caregiver I try to coordinate such things, but that is on a personal one on one level. The online Clinical Nurse Leader program offered at Saint Xavier University educates nurses in their own time with the skills needed to be leaders in the field of nursing and to bring together health care professionals in the care of patients.
Students study at home, in their own time and by their own schedule, which allows them to take the course while still maintaining other commitments and work schedules. The course includes one weekend on campus to apply what has been learned.
